Abstain from alcohol during pregnancy: Study

London, Oct 26 (UNI) Neither a small glass of wine a day nor two small glasses once or twice a week, abstain from drinking alcohol completely if you are expecting a child.

In an advice, British Medical Journal said alcohol may lead to adverse effects on the long-term health of the foetus.

Citing the research, director of professional activities for the British Medical Association Vivienne Nathanson said, ''Evidence is continuing to emerge on the possible risks of pre-natal alcohol exposure at even low to moderate levels.'' ''Given the uncertainty regarding the level of risk to the developing foetus, the lack of clear guidelines and the confusion about consumption levels, the only sensible message for women who are pregnant must be complete abstinence from alcohol,'' the Daily Telegraph quoted her as saying.

Consuming just two glasses of wine a week may delay the development of the foetal nervous system, with lasting effects, the research mentioned.

It was also found that occasional low to moderate drinking during the first three months of pregnancy could have a negative and lasting effect on a child's mental health.

After studying 501 mother and child pairs it was found that behaviour at the ages of six and seven is made worse by low levels of alcohol exposure during pregnancy.

Though there is no evidence that low to moderate alcohol intake in pregnancy has any long-term adverse effects, it is better to ban alcohol consumption completely for the sake of your child's health.
