3111 children to be covered with mid day meal

Imphal, Oct 26 (UNI) The Centre has extended the mid day meal scheme to the Upper Primary Stage of Education effective from October 1 with the identification of 3479 Educationally Backward Blocks (EBBs) in 2007-08.

The Scheme will cover about 1.7 crore children at upper primary stage in the country during the current year, official sources said.

They said the Scheme would cover 3111 children at Upper Primary Stage in five EBBs in Manipur. The Centre released central assistance amounting to Rs 8.59 lakh towards cooking cost to Manipur for Upper Primary Stage during 2007-08.

Calorific food of the mid day meal for upper primary was fixed at 700 calories and 20 grams of protein. The cooking cost would be Rs.

2.50 per child/school day for NE states. Transport subsidy for 11 Special Category States, including Manipur, was enhanced from Rs.

100 per quintal to Rs. 125 per quintal.

CPI wants Nanavati Com. to take cognizance of riots expose

New Delhi, Oct 26 (UNI) The CPI has demanded that the Nanavati Commission take suo motu cognizance of the self-confessed statements by rioters about their ''exploits'' during Gujarat riots as revealed by the Tehelka sting operation. The CPI said the expose only substantiates what was already known to the people in the country. ''Comparing themselves with Rana Pratap and their blood lust with Haldighati is an insult to the glorious memory of the historical personality and his battle,'' the party.....

US fresh sanction against Iran opposed

New Delhi, Oct 26: The Polit Bureau of the CPI (M) has expressed strong opposition to the fresh round of sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran. The party, in a press statement issued here today, said these unilateral sanctions are aimed at Iran's financial system and economy and come in the wake of continuing threats of military action against the country. The sanctions should not find acceptance in the international community and the UPA Government must break its silence.....

Three more Indian pugilists in World Boxing 2nd round

Chicago, Oct 26: Three Indian pugilists registered convincing victories while two of their compatriots fell by the wayside on the third day of World Boxing Championship here. Jai Bhagwan was the most impreesive of the Indians as he brushed aside Valertino Knowles of Bahamas 35-12 in 60kg while Jitender Kumar (51kg) and Dilbag Singh (69kg) were 20-14 and 13-5 victorious over Moldova's Igori Samoilenco and Lithuania's Roman Skerlo respectively in their opening round bouts at the University of Illinois-Chicago Pavilion yesterday......
