110 mini hydel projects to come up in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, Oct 26 (UNI) In all 110 mini hydel clean power projects would be developed under private sector to generate 1,000 MW of power in Orissa in coming days .

On completion, these projects would generate power under the non-conventional energy sector, Minister for Energy S N Patro told newsmen here today.

The government, Mr Patra said, has already given permission to 28 developers and invited expression of interests for 34 more projects.

In addition to it the developers themselves had identified 48 projects for developing small and mini hydro electrical projects in the state.

The Minister said he had asked the State Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) to study the proposals and submit a detailed report at the earliest.

The STAC, headed by Chief Engineer Electrical, and comprising members drawn from Irrigation, Orissa Hydro Power Corporation and GRID Corporation of Orissa win meet once every fortnight and dispose of the cases, he said.

The state government took the fresh initiative to promote small and mini hydro electrical projects to generate clean power as the Central Government wanted to set up more such projects. Moreover, the government's effort some years back to generate power from solar energy under the non-conventional sector had failed.

Mr Patro said the developers of the projects would get 14 paise per unit as carbon credit to control pollution and global warming.

The Minister said two small and mini hydel projects-- Minakshi and Sileru Power projects had started production and two more-- Abantika and Kolab were in the advanced stage of production. All the four projects were located in Koraput district, he said.

Another small project-OPC Ltd in Dhenkanal would be commissioned soon, he said.
