Dhaka, Oct 25 (UNI) Bangladesh a close competitor of India in readymade garment exports, today doubled its target of readymade garment exports to 15-18 billion dollars over the next three years.
'' We're confident of reaching the target from the present 9.2 billion dollars...we have capability and workforce,'' Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Anwarul Alam Chowdhury told reporters today.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) will begin its three-day apparrel and textile exhibition, 'Batexpo-07', from November 15.
Mr Chowdhury said the exhibition, the largest exposition in the Asia Pacific region, will facilitate foreign buyers to see Bangladeshi textiles, clothing and accessories.
Mr Chowdhury said a significant numbers of buyers particularly from the US, Canada, the UK, West Asia, Southeast Asia and many other countries across the globe participated last year.
Organisations from India, Pakistan, China, Japan, Hong Kong and host Bangladesh will participate in the exhibition.
The BGMEA President hailed US Congressman Jim McDermott for introducing a bill called 'New Partnership for Development Act 2007' in the House of Representatives on October 18 to facilitate more market access of LDCs, including Bangladesh's garment, to the US market.
He said BGMEA will send an 11-member delegation to the US to discuss with US Congressmen, officials of USTR and labour organisations so that the bill get passed by both the House of Representative and the Senate.
Although China, India and Sri Lanka are major competitors of Bangladeshi garment, he said Bangladesh would be the main source of RMG export in ultimate analyses, mainly for low and medium price garment.
In reply to a question, Mr Chowdhury said export of garment worth eight million dollars to India is a starter, saying that India could be third largest destination of Bangladeshi RMG after the US and Europe.
He dismissed campaign in the UK against Bangladeshi garment for alleged child labour and low wages, saying that the campaigners could not produce any evident in support of their allegations.
However, the BGMEA President said they have stressed on human resource development, image building and improved relationship between entrepreneurs and workers.
Presently some 2.4 million people, 80 per cent of them comprising women, are directly employed in the garment industry in Bangladesh.
Incumbent caretaker government's Chief Advisor Fakhruddin Ahmed will inaugurate the exposition and army chief General Moeen U Ahmed will attend the concluding ceremony.
