''We fully support and share the concerns of the Government to build adequate buffers of the Non-Basmati varieties of rice which are required for PDS. But, Premium non-Basmati varieties such as Sharbati and Pusa-1121 have never been procured by the Government for the PDS'', said Mr B M Bhatia, Immediate Past President of All India Rice Exporters Association (AIREA).
He urged the Government to lift the ban immediately and provide necessary relief to the exporters and the farmers without any delay.
The Centre had imposed a ban on export of non-basmati rice from October 9. The move has been opposed by exporters as well as farmers as it led to depressing of prices in the domestic market and deprived the growers benefits of lucrative exports.
Meanwhile, exports for which letters of credit were opened before October 9 will not come under the ban.
