Moradabad, Oct 20: The aggressive polio immunisation programme notwithstanding, Uttar Pradesh still accounts for almost 251 polio cases, out of the national figure of 326.

According to a latest World Health Organisation (WHO) report, this year so far Rampur and Moradabad districts in Moradabad division accounted for one polio case each.

Meanwhile, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) experts are arriving here for a 'random checkup' in six blocks on October 25.

They will collect blood samples of immunised children to ascertain the effectiveness of anti-polio doses.

Official sources said here today, despite the long run of the polio eradication programme in western UP, new cases keep cropping regularly.

This explains the visit of the ICMR team to test the efficacy of polio vaccines, sources informed.

The medical experts would check the level of 'anti-polio antibodies' among the immunised children.

It is widely believed that instances of polio were cropping up unabated, since the children in the region possess deficient immunity system due to malnutrition. The WHO report mentions a Bihari boy was afflicted with P-1 virus of polio, while 20 others were sufferring from polio P-3 virus. UP accounts for 14 children afflicted with P-3 virus strain.

In UP, Muzaffarnagar and Meerut districts account for 4 and 2 polio cases each.

Similarly, Bahraich, Bulandshahr, Etah, Mathura and Ghaziabad districts account for one fresh polio case each.
