Bangalore, Oct 18 (UNI) Karnataka will roll out its new Biotechnology policy in January next year to strengthen the state's status as the leader in the biotech space, Chairperson of the state's Vision Group on Biotechnology Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said today.
Talking to newspersons here after announcing the half year results, ended September 30, of pharma major Biocon Ltd, for which she is the CMD, Ms Shaw said the new policy would unveil a framework to attract new investments and offer a host of new facilities to the existing players.
The focus of the new policy would help BT industry to reach out to the rural areas to benefit farmers. 'Greening' of the BT business and the industry would get a fillip as the policy would stress upon the shift of chemical-based BT processes to biological processes. It would also lay emphasis on solid waste management, which offered huge potential in generation of power for the state. ''There is big potential to produce power from solid waste being produced in big cities like Bangalore and others,'' she said.
The policy would deal with how to support the sector and help the existing entrepreneurs financially. It would have a new framework for developing BT parks and value addition to existing human resource development. It would also help bring in a single window system which would help the industry immensely with a streamlined rules and permit hazzles eliminated, she said.
Ms Shaw said the state would offer better facilities to companies involved in experimental farming by amending land laws. ''Many companies based in Bangalore are going to Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to conduct field research which is ridiculous. BT cotton has led to biotechnology reaching the rural mass. The focus will be on of agriculture based BT that benefit the farmers,'' she said.
