Asst CoP held on graft charges in Madurai

Madurai, Oct 17:Sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) arrested a senior police official on graft charges here late last night.

DVAC sources today said, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Vivekanandan, attached to Thallakulam Police in the city was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from a businessman at his sister's house at LIC Colony in K K Nagar here.

The officer had allegedly demanded a bribe from one Khader, a used car dealer, for doing a favour.

A person, who had purchased an old car from Khader, had made an inordinate delay in paying the amount. When Khader met Vivekanandan and lodged a complaint, the official demanded a bribe for seizing the car.

Annoyed over this, Khader lodged a complaint with DVAC Superintendent of Police Balashanmugham, on whose orders, a special team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Kulothunga Pandiyan trapped the officer.

Mr Vivekanandan, recently transferred from Chennai to here, was staying at his sister's house. The team also conducted a raid on the residence and seized some incriminating documents and air tickets, sources said.
