Youth League demands Kerala Minister's expulsion

Kozhikode, Oct 9 (UNI) The pro-IUML Kerala State Muslim Youth League (KSMYL) today demanded the expulsion of State Finance Minister T M Thomas Issac from the Cabinet for his alleged links with ''agents of imperialism''.

Talking to newspersons here, KSMYL President K M Shaji said Mr Issac had no moral right to continue in office as the allegations made by the 'Padhom' magazine that his organisation Kerala Shastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP) was a ''betrayer of the sovereign rights of the people and was an agent of imperialist expansion'' had been proved correct by a court in a defamation case.

He said the charges made in the May-June 2003 issue had been vindicated by the order of the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on September 28, acquitting the printer and publisher of the magazine in a defamation case filed by the KSSP.

The court order also substantiated the charge that the organisation had received Rs 16 crore from imperialist forces, he said and called for a comprehensive probe into the entire issue.

JERUSALEM, Oct 9 (Reuters) Police today questioned Prime Minister Ehud Olmert over allegations of attempted bid-rigging in the sale of a commercial bank, one of several scandals dogging the Israeli leader. Olmert was Israel's finance minister during the 2005 privatisation of Bank Leumi, Israel's second biggest commercial bank. Suspicions in that case focus on whether he tried to tailor the sale offer to give preference to a friend, who ultimately never bid on the bank. Olmert has denied any wrongdoing......

Violence makes mockery of Nigeria democracy -report

ABUJA, Oct 9 (Reuters) Guns, machetes and looted public funds are the real instruments of power in Nigeria, where politicians backed by unelected ''godfathers'' use hired thugs to win office, Human Rights Watch said today. Africa's most populous country returned to civilian rule in 1999 after three decades of almost continuous army dictatorship, but civilian governments have routinely abused basic human rights, the US-based group said in a report. ''In place of democratic competition, struggles for political office have often been.....
