Two SAIL Hockey Academy players selected in India junior team

New Delhi, Oct 9 (UNI) Two SAIL Hockey Academy (SHA) players have been selected in the national junior team for the the five-day International Hockey Challenge Trophy to be held in Singapore from October 17.

Birender Lakra and Jerom Lakra who had joined the SHA, Rourkela in 2004, will be part of the Indian side for the six-nation tournament which will Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia, Pakistan and Singapore.

Right-half Birender and centre-half Jerom, alongwith three other SHA player were among the 60 players initially selected from across the country for the training camps organised ahead at Gugaon and Bhopal ahead of the tournament, said a SAIL release issued here today.

In the 15 years of its existence, the SAIL Hockey Academy has produced several players of national repute, including Pawal Lakra, Suraj Kanta, K Sumesh Kanta, Rajesh Lakra, Md Amir Hayat and Awaish Sanjar.

American arrested in Zimbabwe free pending court

HARARE, Oct 9 (Reuters) An American citizen arrested by police in Zimbabwe on charges of smuggling and illegal possession of arms and ammunition was freed pending a court appearance later today a US embassy official said. Zimbabwe's state radio reported late yesterday that the man, Leslie Francis Howell Jr from Florida, was arrested at Victoria Falls airport on Friday when he tried to board a plane with two pistols and 300 rounds of ammunition. Police could not immediately comment but officials.....

Mauritius scientists fear tourism impact on coral

BLUE BAY, Mauritius, Oct 9 (Reuters) Scientists in Mauritius are warning the Indian Ocean island's ambitious tourism targets will place too much strain on remaining coral. Facing the threats of trade liberalisation to its sugar and textile sectors, Mauritius is boosting tourism with a goal of two million tourists per year from an anticipated 900,000 in 2007. EU says may still ban Brazil meat over health concerns

BRUSSELS, Oct 9 (Reuters) The European Union may resort to a ban on Brazilian meat imports if the South American agricultural giant does not improve food safety standards, the EU's health chief said today. ''We do identify weaknesses in Brazil and we have put pressure on Brazil to respond,'' European Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou told members of the European Parliament.
