TA celebrates 58th raising day in Western Command

Chandigarh, Oct 9 (UNI) The Territorial Army (TA) celebrated its 58th Raising Day here today.

On the occasion, Brig J S Thind, Commander, TA Group HQ Western Command congratulated all the officers and the men for the good work they have done over the past year.

He also appreciated the commendable job that the ecological divisions of TA were carrying out in the difficult terrains.

Set up as a voluntary, part-time Citizen's Army by Mr C Rajagopalchary, the first Governor General of free India on October 9, 1949, the TA consists of persons who are not professional soldiers but civilians eager to contribute their bit towards the country's defence.

Although it does not offer a regular career, the Territorial Army provides an ideal opportunity to the youth of the country to receive military training in their spare time so that in the event of a national emergency they may be called upon to meet the needs of the country's defence and internal security.

The role of the TA is to relieve the regular army of their static duties and to aid the civil power in dealing with natural calamities and maintenance of essential services in situations where life of the community is affected or the security of the country is threatened.

It also provides units for the regular army, when required.
