Rs 6,380 crore development plan for Tuticorin Port

Tuticorin, Oct 9 (UNI) The Tuticorin Port Administration has chalked out elaborate plans to develop the port at an estimated cost of Rs 6,380 crore during the eleventh plan period.

According to official sources here today, the proposal was to develop Inner and Outer harbour to enable the port to handle the projected cargo traffic of 78.10 million tonnes during 2011-12.

About Rs 4,000 crore would be earmarked for the development of the Outer harbour. The project included the construction of 3,100 metre north breakwater and south and east breakwaters of 4,220 metre.

The construction of two containers and three multi-cargo berths with 1,500 metre quay length would be commenced during next fiscal.

The sources said, Cargo berth-nine would be set up at a cost of Rs 40 crore, as part of the Inner harbour development, besides the construction of north cargo berth-one and two.

Channel and basin inside the harbour would be deepened to facilitate berthing of 12.8 metre Draught Vessels. The Berth-eight would be converted into a container terminal.

A Ship Building Yard was also planned with a Building Dock, Pre-erection Yard, Hull Fabrication Section and Galvanising Unit facilities, they added.

Income tax officers on warpath, to stop survey from tommorow

Mumbai, Oct 9 (UNI) Over 45,000 promotee officers and employees of Income Tax department across the country will stop carrying out the survey work from tomorrow, to protest against the non-implementation of their demands by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). As a prelude to this proposed action, office bearers, executive committee members and other activists of the Joint Council of Action (JCA), Mumbai today staged a mass squatting before the chamber of the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax.....

Naxalites kill bodyguard of NSS member

Jamshedpur, Oct 9 (UNI) Armed Maoists today shot dead a policeman and injured the treasurer of Nagarik Surksha Samity (NSS) in between Gura Nala and Kashiabera village near the Jharkhand-Orissa border under Gudabandha police station of East Singhbhum district. Deputy Superintendent of Police Madhusudan Bari said four naxalites, who came in cycles, opened fire at NSS member Shailendra Baskey, riding motorbike with his wife. His bodyguard Jogeshwar Murmu who was escorting the former in another bike received six bullets and died.....

GAIL to supply gas to Bawana power plant

New Delhi, Oct 9 (UNI) State-owned GAIL (India) Ltd today inked a gas sales agreement (GSA) with Pragati Power Corporation Ltd (PPCL), Bawana to supply two million standard cubic metres per day (MMSCMD) of R-LNG. ''Gas will be sourced from Petronet LNG Ltd and GAIL will be transporting it to PPCL for which a MoU has already been signed with BPCL and IOCL,'' company's Chairman and Managing Director Dr U D Choubey said.
