Reduce troops presence, give general amnesty to detenues in J&K, CPI

Srinagar, Oct 9 (UNI) Appealing for troops reduction, revocation of special power to them and a general amnesty for detenues, the Communist Party of India (M) has strongly pleaded for providing a fresh momentum to the stalled peace process between India and Pakistan.

The appeal was made at the end of the two-day session, presided over by the State secretary Mohammad Yousuf Targami.

The Committee demanded sizable reduction of the central forces, deployed internally in the state and revocation of special powers to them, in view of a visible and universally accepted improvement in the security situation.

In this context the committee said the constitution of certain committees by the centre in the past proved a mere rigmarole and eyewash.

The Committee made a fervent plea to the government to pronounce general amnesty to all those lodged in several prisons in and outside the state, as a worthwhile response to the growing urge of the people for peace and reconciliation.

Mr Tarigami, expressed shock and sorrow over the fact that despite much acclaim, the inter action between the two parts of Kashmir continued to be confined to a miniscule section of the people, not to speak of widening the trade links, the facilitation of the easy travel, the exchange of goods and ideas.

The committee expressed its anguish over the unending bickering between the coalition partners in the state which only adds to the woes and sufferings of the common people.

The Committee deplored the failure of the government to come to the rescue of the fruit growers at a time when the state horticulture was face to face with a pro-rich world market and a hostile and unequal competition.

The committee demanded revival of the collapsing Public Distribution System, which had broken the backs of the vulnerable sections of our people.
