Prachanda warns the SPA may break, if deadlock not resolved

Kathmandu, Oct 9 (UNI) Maoists Chairman Prachanda today warned that the Seven-Party Alliance (SPA) in Nepal could break if the alliance partners failed to reach an agreement at the special session of the interim Parliament, starting October 11.

If the political stalemate could not be resolved the incumbent government led by Girija Prasad Koirala may collapse and a new government formed through a ''broader roundtable conference'', the Maoists chief told a newsconference in Dipayal.

''The parties should either agree on the declaration of a republic through the House and fully proportional electoral system or their alternatives to keep the alliance intact.

''The alliance could break and a political crisis could surface, if we fail to reach an agreement,'' Prachanda said.

''However, if there is an agreement then the Constituent Assembly elections could be held by mid-April next year,'' he said.

Prachanda denied to comment on the alternatives to decide the fate of monarchy in the Himalayan nation.
