NRO challenged in Supreme Court

Islamabad, Oct 9 (UNI) Two constitutional petitions challenging the legality of the National Reconciliation Ordinance have been filed in the Supreme Court.

The petitioners are Dr Mubashar Hassan, senior leader and founder member of the Pakistan People's Party and senior counsel M Aslam Khaki.

The petitioners contended that the Ordinance was ''unjust and abuse of power'', seeking a stay on it till the final disposal of the case.

With the National Reconciliation Ordinance, 2007 coming into force all cases constituted against public officials having tenure between January 1, 1986 to October 12, 1999, will be withdrawn and terminated with immediate effect.

President Pervez Musharraf, former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao, Secretary Muttahida Qaumi Movement Farooq Sattar and the Federation of Pakistan through the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs have been made respondents, The News reported.

The petitioners have alleged that the legislation was infact, ''a reconciliation for personal gains'' with selective political parties, mainly the respondents.
