Mayawati to BSP cadre: Prepare to capture power at Centre

Lucknow, Oct 9 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati today exhorted the party cadre to be prepared for a mid-term general election and blamed the Congress for 'ditching' the people on the issues of nuclear agreement, Ram Sethu and inflation.

Addressing a mammoth 'Savdhan raho, aage barho' rally on the outskirts of the state capital, the BSP leader said the Lok Sabha elections could be held anytime now and asked the workers to make all-out efforts for the landslide victory of the party.

''I will give you reasons for early polls...the first being that the United Progressive Alliance is facing inner contradictions of the nuclear deal with the United States. In fact, the Congress should have taken all parties into confidence before signing the deal. The other reason for early polls is the faulty affidavit filed by the Centre in the Supreme Court on the Ram Sethu project. It was wrong to file such an affidavit. Finally, inflation is giving a tough time to the common man, '' she said Criticising the UPA government for denying adequate financial assistance to development-starved Uttar Pradesh, the chief minister virtually launched a Lok Sabha poll campaign asking her party to help install the BSP government at the Centre for the overall progress of 'sarvasamaj' (all sections).

A Congress spokesperson, meanwhile, has denied the charges of the CM. ''The Manmohan Singh government has given UP more funds than any other central government in the recent past,'' UP Congress chief spokesperson A P Singh said here.

Expressing her aspirations to capture power at the Centre in the next Lok Sabha polls, Ms Mayawati said only after BSP comes to power at the Centre all the demands of the state would be met.

Shs also favoured a division of Uttar Pradesh into smaller states, if the Centre agreed.

Claiming that her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was a supporter of smaller states for better administration, she said her government was ready to carve out Bundelkhand, Poorvanchal and Harit Pradesh out of UP and get it approved by the state legislature. ''If the Centre is willing, my government is ready to work out the modalities,'' she added.

Expressing her sympathy towards the suspended police officers and dismissed cops followuing a probe into the much-hyped police recruitment scam, Ms Mayawati made it clear that such strict action had to be taken due to the irregularities done by the previous Mulayam Singh Yadav government so that it is not repeated in the future.

''I express my sympathy towards both the dismissed cops and the suspended police officers,'' she said, adding that now these officials would never do anything wrong in future, while priority in the government jobs would be given to those dismissed cops who are elegible.

Addressing the rally to mark the first anniversary of death of BSP founder Kanshiram organised at the newly developed Ramabai Ambedkar ground, Ms Mayawati slammed the Congress on various counts.

She said if the BSP came to power at the Centre, it would implement ten per cent reservation for the upper caste poor.

Commenting on the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), she said the BSP would strive to provide permanent employment to the people, instead of 100 days' employment under NREGS. ''In fact, NREGS is a waste of money,'' she quipped.
