Mayawati shows sympathy towards dismissed cops, suspended IPS

Lucknow, Oct 9 (UNI) In a major climbdown, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati today said that she has full sympathy with the dismissed cops and the suspended police officials in connection with the police recruitment scam.

Addressing a rally here, Ms Mayawati said her governemnt had to take tough decisions to nail the culprits and to prevent such things in the future.

''I can only assure that those dismissed cops, who are elegible, would be given priority in state government jobs,'' she said.

''We have also constituted a high-level probe team to find out the corruption angle in the police recruitment scam and if any other people were involved in it,'' she added.

Earlier, the BSP government had dismissed over 18,000 cops and suspended 25 senior IPS officers in connection with the appointment of over 22,000 policemen in the state during Mulayam Singh Yadav regime in 2005-06.

She also said that to maintain transparency in her government, all the officials have been asked to meet people daily to solve their day-to-day problems.

''The Law and order situation in the state has improved and the crime taking place at present was only due to personal enmity,'' the BSP leader said.

Targeting the opposition parties, the UP CM said that after their defeat in the assembly polls, these parties were trying to create communal disturbances in the state.

''Incidents of cow slaughter and burning of holy religious books recently in different parts of the state prove the conspiracy of these political outfits,'' he alleged.
