Govt formulating National Plan of Action to check human trafficking

New Delhi, Oct 9 (UNI) The Government is formulating an Integrated National Plan of Action to prevent and curtail the menace of human trafficking which would address all aspect of trafficking including those for sex work, bonded labour and organ trade, Minister of State for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury said today.

Expressing concern that over three million people were victims of trafficking in the country of whom 40 per cent were children, Ms Chowdhury said that Comprehensive Plan of Action would be formulated by her ministry along with Home Ministry, the National Human Rights Commission and the National Commission for Women.

She said that the ministry has asked the state governments to take measures to check human trafficking from Bangladesh and Nepal at the border outpost. They should take measures for quick and safe repatriation of trafficked persons also.

To highlight all these aspects and increase regional cooperation to check trafficking a two day Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking South Asia Regional Cooperation is being organised here from tomorrow, she informed. The Conference is being organised by the Government in association with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and would have participation from various SAARC countries.

They would deliberate on increasing cooperation to check human trafficking and share best practices on rehabilitation and repatriation. Training and capacity building would also be focused at the Conference, she said and added that the it would endeavour to fight human trafficking and provide a safe and secure environment to women and children.
