Arctic Monkeys named "best act in the world"

LONDON, Oct 9 (Reuters) Indie band Arctic Monkeys triumphed at the Q Awards beating U2, Foo Fighters and The Killers to be named the best act in the world.

Dame Shirley Bassey presented the award to the Sheffield group yesterday, who covered one of her best known hits ''Diamonds Are Forever'', at this summer's Glastonbury Festival.

They missed out on two other awards, beaten to the best album prize by Amy Winehouse's ''Back to Black'' and losing to Devon rockers Muse in the best live act category. Welsh band Manic Street Preachers won the best track award for ''Your Love Alone Is Not Enough'', while indie group Kaiser Chiefs picked up the best video award for ''Ruby''.

Newcomer Kate Nash won the best breakthrough artist prize at the central London ceremony.

There was a lifetime achievement award for Johnny Marr, ex-guitarist with The Smiths.

Special awards went to Kylie Minogue (Q Idol), Paul McCartney (Q Icon) and Factory Records founder Tony Wilson (Q Hero), who died in August.

Launched in 1990, many of the winners are chosen in a vote by readers of Q music magazine.

Sensex hits all time high of 18,000

Mumbai, Oct 9: The stock market benchmark Sensex today crossed the 18,000 mark to close at 18280, up 788 points on the back of renewed buying. The National Stock Exchange's Nifty rose by 242 points at 5327 from the previous close. Earlier in the day, the index opened with a negative gap of 89 points at 17,402, and soon tumbled to a low of 17,287. The last 1,000 points took just eight trading days on the Bombay Stock Exchange. Tripura expresses interest to set up trade link with Thailand

Agartala, Oct 9 (UNI) Tripura has evinced interest in setting up a fruit processing, horticultural produces, tourism and infrastructure business with Thailand while hoped of successful trade between the two countries.
