Singapore all sets to be 'Hollywood of the East': Minister

Singapore, Oct 8 (UNI) Singapore is all set to become the Hollywood of the East, Minister of State for Trade and Industry Lee Yi Shyan said here today.

Inaugurating the Asia Campus of the New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, he said, ''Singapore has been stressing on science and technology education for the last four to five decades.'' Expressing hope that the school could play an important role in nurturing the creative talent, especially the film-making industry, he said, ''We realised many of the economies at this stage of their development require something else - creativity and the understanding of the human.'' ''It is this expression of ideas and aspiration where there is room for Singapore to develop,'' the Strait Times quoted the minister as saying.

Singapore's Tisch school is the first-ever branch campus of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Also, it is the first American art school to set up here.

Two Singaporean students were among the Asians chosen at Tisch Asia.

33 people feared drowned in Meghna river

Dhaka, Oct 8 (UNI) At least 33 people were feared drowned as a boat sank in the Meghna river in the rough weather in central Bangladesh today. Police said an engine-propelled boat, carrying 50 passengers, sailed from Raipura thana ferry terminal but it soon was caught in a storm and capsized in Raipura sub-district of Narsingdi district. Police Sub-Inspector Toriqul Islami said some 33 people went missing. It was feared that all the missing people had drowned since they could not.....

Bangalore-Mangalore Project to be opened in November

Bangalore, Oct 8 (UNI) The rail track between Bangalore and Mangalore will be thrown open for passenger traffic from the second week of November and there will not be further extension of deadline, Minister of State for Railways R Velu said today. Mr Velu told reporters on the side lines of a function here today that all safety measures have been taken for the operation of trains on the track which would provide a shortest distance between Eastern and Western Coast.....

Mysore Zoo gets giraffe for captive breeding

Mysore Oct 8 (UNI) With the arrival of two year old female giraffe from Lucknow zoo, the long awaited desire of Mysore Zoo authorities to continue the captive breeding has been fulfilled. Zoo Director, Vijayaranjan Singh said here today that two year old Kushi was brought after 2400 km long hardous journey last evening in a special container on the exchange programme for a pair of chimpanzees, which was approved by the Zoo Authorities of India.
