Reuters expects US ruling on Thomson deal by Jan 15

LONDON, Oct 8 (Reuters) Reuters Group today said the US Department of Justice will give its decision on the proposed takeover by Canadian financial information company Thomson Corp by January 15.

Reuters and Thomson said in a joint statement that they would continue to work with the European Commission after it said it would open an in-depth antitrust investigation into the deal.

The companies said they expect the second phase of the European regulatory review to be completed in the first quarter of next year.

Nigeria fights rare vaccine-derived polio outbreak

GENEVA, Oct 8 (Reuters) Nigeria is fighting a rare outbreak of vaccine-derived polio after 69 children caught the paralysing disease from others who had already been immunised, the World Health Organisation said today. The cluster occurred when some of those who received the oral polio vaccine excreted a mutated form of the virus, which infected others who were not immunised. Polio spreads through faecal-oral contact and thrives in areas with poor sanitation. Though such mutations are extremely rare, vaccine-derived polio virus.....

VATICAN CITY, Oct 8 (Reuters)World Jewish leaders today expressed concern to Pope Benedict about resurgent anti-Semitism and asked Vatican officials to take steps against a radical Polish priest accused of making anti-Jewish comments. Gambia releases two Amnesty staff on bail

BANJUL, Oct 8 (Reuters) Gambian today released on bail two foreign workers from rights group Amnesty International, who were detained at the weekend on suspicion of spying when they attempted to visit a detained opposition politician. Tania Bernath, who holds joint British and US citizenship, and Ayobele Ameen, a Nigerian, were released on payment of a 5,376 dollars bond but authorities retained their passports.
