President releases commemorative stamps on Air Force day

New Delhi, Oct 8 (UNI) President Pratibha Devisingh Patil today released a set of four commemorative stamps and First day Cover with Special Cancellation on the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of the Indian Air Force here today.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister of Communications and Information Technology A Raja said ''the Department of Posts is privileged to release a set of commemorative stamps on this memorable occasion.'' ''The set of four stamps which depict the four aircraft Westland Wapiti, Airborne Warning and Control System, IL-78 and Advanced Light Helicopter - Dhruv is a tribute to the spirit and professional skills of the Indian Air Force and a recognition of its vital role in the life of our nation,'' he said. The Indian Air Force also assists India Post in providing dedicated load for mail transmission to otherwise inaccessible areas of the country. India Post has also signed an MoU with Indian Air Force for delivery of AOG consignment all over the country, he added.

Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi were also present on the occassion.

J'khand witnesses students' union election after 27 years

Ranchi, Oct 8 (UNI) The fate of about 1800 candidates remained sealed in ballot boxes after the much-hyped polling for students' unions at all colleges, under three univerties in Jharkhand, were held today after a gap of 27 years amid tight security. The respective district authorities took adequate precautionary measures to thwart any untoward incident. In contrast to the hullabaloo and heated campaign by different student bodies witnessed during the run up to the elections, the polling continued peacefully till 1600.....

Uttar Pradesh: Man dies of penury

Mahoba, Oct 9: Failing to get medical aid due to alleged penury, a man died in this district of Uttar Pradesh today. Naresh Chandra (45) of Milkipura was keeping unwell for the past few days, sources said. Following financial hardships, he could not get timely treatment and died this morning. UNI.....

Mysterious fever continues to grip medicos

Chennai, Oct 8 (UNI) Mysterious fever continues to grip the medicos of the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital, with seven people, including three students, being admitted to hospital today. Official sources said those admitted to the hospital were final year students -- J Kumar, Kadhirvelu and Babu -- and four nurses. The spread of the fever has sent panic waves among the students, medical staff, nurses and other employees. Its breakout came barely three days after the college and hostel.....
