Pakistan, Malaysia to participate in Balwant Kapur Hockey

Chandigarh, Oct 8 (UNI) Teams from Lahore (Pakistan) and Malaysia will compete in the fourth Sardar Balwant Singh Kapur Memorial Hockey Tournament for under-17 school boys which will be organised from December 10 to 17 at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar.

While stating this here today, Organising Committee President Harbhajan Singh Kapur said top 16 teams from all over the country, including defending champions Government Model School, Jalandhar and runners-up Shri Guru Harkrishan Public School, New Delhi and teams from Malaysia and Pakistan would compete in the tournament.

The league-cum-knockout tournament carries a cash prize of Rs one lakh for the winners, Rs 60,000 for runners-up while the third position team will get Rs 40,000.

Mr Kapur said in the tournament, the organising committee would select the best goalkeeper, the best fullback, the best halfback and the best forward. Each best player would receive Rs 5,000, he added.

Meanwhile, the All India Surjit Memorial Hockey Tournament will be conducted in Jalandhar from October 26 to November 2, while the All India Gurmit Hockey Tournament will be held in Chandigarh from November 3 to 13. The Nehru Hockey Tournament will commence on November 14 in New Delhi.

Mumbai, Oct 8 (UNI) Vijay Merchant XI made the most of the opportunity to bat first at the 22nd Sportstar Trophy U-19 MCA Selection Tournament first round, putting on 284 against Vijay Manjrekar XI at the Elf Vengsarkar Academy ground here today. Openers Swapnil Salvi (42, six fours) and Travel Dabre (34, five fours) put on 78 for the first wicket, then they lost three quick wickets before captain Sushant Khaire (62, one six and eight fours) guided the middle-order.
