Kolkata Police and Ceat jointly organise safety awareness campaign

Kolkata, Oct 8 (UNI) Leading tyre manufacturer Ceat Limited, in association with Kolkata Police, organised a road safety awareness campaign here today with a view to averting accidents prior to the coming Durga Puja festival.

Kolkata Additional Commissioner of Police C V Murlidhar, in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, traffic and other senior officials of the state Transport department and Ceat representatives, inaugurated the campaign at the Esplanade-Dornia crossing.

The seven-day road safety awareness campaign, from October 8-14, would be held at 19 places in and around the city, the main focus of which would be to spread safety awareness among the drivers as well as pedestrians, Ceat Limited Chief Executive Officer Monotosh Roy said.

He said varoius NGOs were also being involved in the programme.

Besides, 150 children will help the police during the safety week by keeping a watch on pedestrians, traffic and public transport and advise them to follow traffic norms, he added.

The campaign would be organised at all major intersections in the city, including shopping complexes, market areas and car parking lots. During the campaign, policemen and Ceat volunteers would control the traffic and safety rules and signals would be announced through public address system.

Ceat Eastern India Zonal Manager Arun Bajaj said safety was a fundamental right and an essential condition for sustainable development of society.

''Following traffic rules and regulations is important for safe and secure living and we believe in ensuring safety for our customers to strengthen our relationship with them,'' he added.

Flying squad to check mineral theft in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, Oct 8 (UNI) In an attempt to check the growing theft and illegal trade of minerals in Orissa, the government today decided to constitute two flying squads comprising police and civil officials. A meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik took this decision to set up the squads under the direct supervision of the Inspector General (Law and Order). Each squad will be constituted with the officers from the Forest, Mines and State Police departments have one section of police.....

UCE students resort to relay hunger strike

Sambalpur, Oct 8 (UNI) After peaceful dharna for five days demanding deemed university status, the students of University College of Engineering (UCE) at Burla today resorted to relay hunger strike. Nearly 25 boys and girls of the college sat in the relay hunger strike to intensify their demand. Official sources said a staff council meeting chaired by the principal Professor S K Sanyal was held to find out solutions over the impasse. Two senior staff and students will move to Bhubaneswar.....
