IIM-A director to step down after 5-year stint

Ahmedabad, Oct 8 (UNI) Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad director Prof Bakul H Dholakia today said his stint at the Institute was satisfactory and he had done everything to make it a top-ranking management school not only in India but in Asia too.

''I am steping down with a sense of satisfaction,'' said Prof Dholakia on the eve of his completion of 5-year term as IIM-A director.

Talking to mediapersons here, he said ''I took over as IIM-A director in October 2002 with a clear vision. IIM-A was a well-known Institute and a graded institute already. My task was defining and improving upon its excellence.'' On his tussles with the HRD Ministry, Mr Dholakia said ''If an Institute of higher learning has to sustain the excellence and improve upon excellence in a fast-changing global environment, then you require greater flexibility (administrative and financial) and educational autonomy.

''If you expect global standards and competitiveness, then there is a need for global operative freedom. Otherwise there would be no level-playing field. Level playing field comes through greater autonomy only. I'm convinced about it.'' The outgoing director said he would hand over the charge to dean Professor Verma on Wednesday morning. Since no new director has been announced it is customary to hand it over to the dean.

Prof Dholakia was quick to clarify that he was only stepping down from directorship and not retiring.

''Retirement age is 65 and I have five more years to go,'' he said, adding ''I am only stepping down from the directorship. I will be part of IIM-A in days to come. I have a position in the Institute as a professor.'' He said he will go on vacation for next two to three months as he had been working without any vaction ever since he took over as IIM-A director.

Prof Dholakia said after taking over as director, he had redefined the vision and mission of IIM-A with a focus on making the institute emerge as a top-ranking management school in the world and achieving global recognition. Under his stewardship, the Institute was not only a top-ranking management school in India but in Asia too, in less than four years.
