Congress retains Nanded municipal corporation

Mumbai, Oct 8 (UNI) Congress retained power in the Nanded Municipal corporation in Marathwada region, bagging 38 out of the total 73 seats.

NCP won ten seats, BJP three, Shiv Sena nine, MNS, SP and BSP one each, independents six and others four.

In the by-elections to 22 wards of municipal councils, Congress bagged eight, NCP three, BJP and shiv sena two each and others won seven seats.

By-elections were held for 25 seats in Municipal corporations. NCP won eight, Congress four, BJP and Shiv Sena two each, local fronts and independents nine seats.

Elections to 7788 seats of gram panchayats were also held yesterday, out of which 1307 have been elected unopposed. In 15 districts, voting was more than 80 per cent. A repoll had to be ordered today in three wards in Sangli, Kolhapur and Thane districts due to technical problems. Counting will be held tommorrow.

'Invest in capacity building of Engineers': Guv Krishna

Mumbai, Oct 8 (UNI) Maharashtra Governor S M Krishna today observed that in the wake of globalisation, the state government should invest in capacity building of engineers which would fetch rich dividends for the government and ultimately society. Speaking at the Engineers' Day celebrations, organised by the state government, at Ravindra Natya Mandir here, Mr Krishna said traditional technologies were fast making way for sophisticated and breakthrough technologies. Chumbhale wins NMC by-election

Nashik, Oct 8 (UNI) Shivaji Chumbhale, candidate of the NCP-Congress-RPI alliance, won the by-election for Ward number 91 of the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC). According to sources, Chumbhale defeated his nearest rival, Shiv Sena candidate, Ramesh Ughade by 675 votes. Chumbhale got 2,229 votes while Ughanda could manage only 1,554 votes. Voting for the by-election was held here yesterday. The voters turnout was 64 per cent as only 4,506 exercised their franchise out of the total 7,085 voters. Election was necessitated.....

8 killed, 14 injured in Rajkot

Rajkot, Oct 8 (UNI) At least eight persons were killed and 14 others were injured in two separate road accidents in Saurashtra region last night. In the first incident, two persons were killed and six others were injured when a State Transport Roadways Bus bumped into a tree while taking a sharp turn near Sardhar, about 50 km from here, on the Rajkot-Bhavnagar highway. The victims were returning to Botad after attending a Brahm Sammelan here. The injured were rushed.....
