Australia suffers first combat death in Afghanistan

SYDNEY, Oct 8 (Reuters) Australia suffered its first combat fatality in the war on terror today when a soldier was killed in a roadside bomb attack in Afghanistan, said the Australian defence department.

Another soldier was wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated next to their vehicle in Oruzgan province, the department said in a statement.

Australia, a close US ally, was one of the first nations to commit troops in late 2001 to the US led war to oust the Taliban and al Qaeda militants from Afghanistan. It also has about 1,500 troops in and around Iraq.

India, Aus teams arrive in Chandigarh

New Delhi, Oct 07 2007: The Indian and Australian cricket teams arrived in Chandigarh on Saturday for the fourth one-dayer of the ongoing 7-match ODI Future Cup series to be played at Sector 16 stadium on Monday. After their arrival from Hyderabad, the teams were taken to Taj hotel amid tight security. Both sides will have practice sessions today. India is 2-0 down in the seven-match ODI series. EU to apply pressure on China over steel-Germany

BERLIN, Oct 8 (Reuters) The European Union will put pressure on China to end government subsidies for steel exporters, Germany's Economy Minister said on Monday. Speaking at a steel conference in Berlin, Michael Glos said he understood why European steelmakers were concerned about the impact of cheap Chinese steel on business, and that the European Commission had agreed to investigate the matter. ''We need fair rules in world trade and you cannot expect the German and European steel industries to compete.....

Iraq sees $42 bln 2008 budget, up $1 bln on 2007

BAGHDAD, Oct 8 (Reuters) Iraq has prepared a $42 billion budget for 2008, an increase of $1 billion on this year, Finance Minister Bayan Jabor said. ''We have finished the budget and now all it needs is printing,'' he told Reuters on Sunday. ''It is $42 billion, that is $1 billion more than last year's.'' Jabor said $10 billion would be spent on investment projects outside the Baghdad region, focusing on schools and water projects. An additional $4 billion unspent this.....
