UP retains 13th Natl Sub-Jr Boys Hockey title

Bhopal, Oct 6 (UNI) Defending champions Uttar Pradesh today defeated Namdhari 11 by 2-1 to retain the 13th National Sub-Junior Boys Hockey Championship title played at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) premises here.

Punjab and Sindh Bank got the better of host Madhya Pradesh State Men's Hockey Academy 2-1 in the battle for the third spot.

Earlier, Namdhari 11 beat Madhya Pradesh State Men's Hockey Academy by 4-2 in the semi-final, while Uttar Pradesh defeated Punjab and Sindh Bank 3-2 in another semi-final.

Thirty-six teams from various states took part in the ten-day event, which was held under the aegis of the Indian Hockey Federation and state Sports and Youth Welfare Department.

Madhya Pradesh Finance Minister Raghavji gave away the prizes.

Bhopal Mayor Sunil Sood was present during the programme. Besides, Olympic sportspersons Ashok Dhyanchand, Aslam Sher Khan and Altaf Khan were also present.

Kumaraswamy rules out joining hands with Congress for survival

Bangalore, Oct 6 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy today ruled out the possibility of seeking Congress support for his survival following coalition partner BJP deciding to withdraw its support. Talking to newspersons on his arrival at the Airport, he said ''the situation does not arise now, we have sufficient strength to fight on our own''. Strongly defending his party's decision in not handing over power to BJP, Mr Kumaraswamy charged that BJP leaders had no minimum courtesy to consult.....

Brown to rule out early UK vote as polls dip

LONDON, Oct 6 (Reuters) British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is expected to rule out an early election this year after polls showed his lead over his Conservative rivals had dwindled, the BBC reported today. Brown, who took over from Tony Blair earlier this year, had in recent weeks toyed with the idea of holding an early election when polls showed him far ahead of the Conservatives after his ruling Labour Party held a conference.
