Kolkata, Oct 6 (UNI) The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal police today made two senior IPS undergo a gruelling grilling a day after veteran CPI(M) leader Jyoti Basu made public the party's disapproval of the role of police in the mysterious death of Rizwanur Rehman.
" Deputy Commissioner (Headquarters) Gyanwant Singh and Detective Department Deputy Commissioner Ajoy Kumar were summoned by the CID and interrogated. Their statements have been recorded, " a CID spokesman told reporters.
Both officers, who according to the family of Rizwanur, had threatened and harassed the 30-year-old graphic designer after his marriage with an industrialist's daughter, had been questioned for more than five hours at the state police headquarters at Bhavani Bhavan.
The CID, which had already grilled an Assistant Police Commissioner and a Sub-Inspector in this connection, submitted an interim report to the Government on September three.
Amid mounting public opinion against the alleged role of police in the death of Rizwanur, whose body was found beside railway tracks on September 21, Mr Basu said yesterday that two police officers had already been removed in connection with the incident.
According to informed sources, Assistant Commissioner Sukanti Chakraborty and Sub-Inspector Krishnendu Das, who had personally summoned Rizwanur to the city police headquarters on the basis of a complaint of Priyanka's father Ashok Todi, had been removed from their posts.
However, Home Secretary Prasad Ranjay Ray said yesterday that he had not so far received any information of any police officer being removed. He, however, said the Government would take legal advice in this matter.
Rizwanur's family apprehended that the youth, whose inter-religious marriage was resented by his father-in-law, might have been killed.
Demands were being raised from different quarters, including a number of Ministers as well as the Opposition, led by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, for removal of all the police officers, named in the incident, for the sake of an impartial inquiry.
While Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee had tried to justify the police summoning the couple in order to solve a 'social problem', Mr Basu condemned his statement uneqivocally after the party's state committee meeting, saying it was bad and unwarranted making it clear that neither was the CPI(M) nor the Government going to approve it.
Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi said on September two that a proper inquiry should be conducted into the incident and suitable action be taken against the guilty.
Today, CPI(M) state committee Secretary Biman Basu reiterated that any police officer, irrespective of his stature, would not be spared if found guilty of threatening or causing the death of Rizwanur.
