Train services disrupted by demostrators demanding medical college

Balasore, Oct 6 (UNI) Life in this north Orissa town was paralysed today, due to a dawn-to-dusk bandh called for the establishment of a government medical college and hospital.

A Joint Action Committee had been formed for today's agitation with support extended by all political parties, trade unions, women and student bodies and youth organisations of the district.

Sources said except train services, which resumed after an hour- long demonstration at the station, all other services came to a grinding halt.

Almost all shops, business establishments, banks, financial institutions, post offices and telecom offices besides the educational institutions were closed.

Though government offices and courts remained open, they were unable to function due to the demonstration.

Official sources said the bandh was by and large peaceful barring stray incidents of vehicle damage by the bandh agitators. No major untoward incident had been reported during the period, Three persons were taken into custody for trying to block the railway tracks.

The 201 Up and 2509 Down Bangalore-Guwahati Express were detained at Balasore station for a short duration.

BJP to meet Governor Thakur tomorrow

Bangalore, Oct 6 (UNI) The Bharatiya Janata Party will tomorrow submit a letter to Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur to formally withdraw support to the Janata Dal (Secular), bringing an end to the 20-month-old arrangement between the two parties. Speaking to UNI over phone from New Delhi, state party chief D V Sadananda Gowda said a meeting of the party's legislators had been convened tomorrow morning before meeting the Governor. In reply to a question, Mr Gowda informed that no decision.....

Manipur dominates climbing competition

Imphal, Oct 6:  Manipur continued to dominate the ninth North East Zone Climbing competition with the state team winning gold medals in the boys and girls events on the third day here today. The hosts had so far won seven gold, three silver and one bronze while Meghalaya had managed two silver and Arunachal Pradesh one silver medal. More than 100 competitors from Manipur, Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Tripura are participating in the competition. UNI.....

UK's Brown calls for more EU sanctions on Myanmar

LONDON, Oct 6 (Reuters) British Prime Minister Gordon Brown called today for international pressure to be increased on Myanmar's ruling generals and tougher sanctions from the European Union. Brown was meeting a delegation of Myanmar democracy campaigners as part of a global day of protests. ''I want the EU to impose further sanctions on the regime to make it absolutely clear we will not tolerate the abuses that have taken place,'' he told the delegation. ''I want all the other leaders.....
