SUCI demands neutral commission for Rizwanur case

Kolkata, Oct 6 (UNI) The Soclialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) today demanded a ''neutral inquiry commission'' comprising intellectuals, lawyers and journalists to investigate the mysterious death of graphic designer Rizwanur Rehman.

Talking to newspersons here, SUCI state president Provash Ghosh said, ''We have no faith in either the CID or the CBI or judicial inquiries because the track records of these agencies are not so good.'' The real fact behind Rizwanur's death would come out and the state government could gain the people's confidence in this case by setting up the commission consisting of intellectuals, lawyers and media persons.

Referring to veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu's criticism of Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee, Mr Ghosh charged the party with trying to mislead the people in this case.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and his administration were trying to shield both Mr Mukherjee and two IPS officers, he alleged.

''We will observe protest day throughout the state on October 11 and a protest rally will be taken out on October 10 at the Park Circus Maidan, demanding the arrest and punishment of those police officials and businessmen Ashok Todi,'' he said.
