Kurukshetra, Oct 6 (UNI) While their native land remained plagued with social evils like dowry deaths, caste system and female infanticide, the Africans of Indian origins were proud to uphold high values practised by Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa.

Evils like dowry, female infanticide and caste-related bias were unknown among South African Indians, Professor B Bishram Rambilas of Durban Westerville University, South Africa said here.

He was leading a team of 15 South African women whose forefathers were Indians.

While on a visit recently to the holy city of Kurukshetra, the team was accorded a warm welcome by NGO Antarjyoti of Kurukshetra at Brahampuri Ashram here.

The delegation members, most of them fluent in Hindi and Sanskrit, also participated in a Havan (fire sacrifice).

The leader of the delegation Professor Rambilass observed that Indians in South Africa had achieved tremendous social reforms and were leading successful and prosperous lives without losing their Indian heritage and identity.

The delegation claimed that they had removed dowry and caste system completely among South African Indians- the true followers of Mahatma Gandhi.
