No immediate troops cut in J&K, infiltration, violence going on

Srinagar, Oct 6 (UNI) Rejecting immediate troops withdrawal from Jammu and Kashmir, Chief of the Army Staff General Deepak Kapoor today said the decision has to be taken by the political leadership of the country.

But, he said infiltration from across the border was still continuing and militancy related incidents occurring after brief peace in the valley. ''We want to restore total normalcy in the state,'' he added.

''We have been given the task by the Government of India in the state which we are doing to the best of our ability,'' General Kapoor, told a news conference at the battalion headquarters of 34 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) at Beerwah this aftenoon.

He said, ''we will be happy to go to barracks once the decision is taken by the political leadership. If tomorrow the Centre feels that situation has become peaceful, we will go to barracks,'' he added.

However, he said the infiltration attempts from across the border were still on.

General Kapoor lauding the troops of 34 RR, said nine infiltrators were killed in the Tangmarg area of north Kashmir recently, while three others were gunned down in the Tangdhar sector yesterday.

Two senior officers also laid down their lives and four other jawans were injured in these encounter, he said and added that ''I salute them''.

He said the level of violence sometimes goes down. There was near normalcy for about three to four weeks in the valley before a sudden spurt in violence again recently, he said.

Dumka, Oct 6 (UNI) A local court today acquitted Jharkhand Deputy Chief Minister Stephen Marandi in a 12-year-old case of violation of the model code of conduct in this district. The court of First Class Magistrate S S Fatmi delivered the judgement as no witness was produced against Mr Marandi in the court. Mayor's husband held, released for illegal transport of liquor

Nagpur, Oct 6 (UNI) Nagpur Mayor's husband and a car driver were arrested and later released on bail on charges of illegally carrying country liquor in a car belonging to Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). According to the police, Chintaman Iwnate, husband of Mayor Maya Iwnate, was arrested yesterday in connection with the seizure of several crates of country liquor on Thursday from a vehicle belonging to the civic body. Tambe, who was driving the car, was arrested immediately after.....

12 death sentences, 251 life in Bihar this year

Patna, Oct 6 (UNI) Twelve people have been awarded death sentences and 251 life imprisonment in connection with various criminal cases, including those involving some high-profile politicians in Bihar, so far this year. State police headquarters sources said three influential politicians--former MP Anand Mohan and former MLAs--Akhlaque Ahmad and Arun Kumar were awarded death sentences by a lower court in Patna on October 3 in connection with the murder of former Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaiya, who was beaten to death.....
