Nashik, Oct 6 (UNI) National Agriculture Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) of India Ltd chairman Changdeo Holkar today appealed to farmers in Maharashtra to bring the stored onions in market to avoid financial losses.
''Now, the onion crop from Rajasthan and Karnataka has arrived.
With this arrival, the rates will decrease in the market. Therefore, farmers in Maharashtra should bring their onions to market as early as possible, otherewise, they will suffer financial losses,'' Mr Holkar appealed to farmers while talking to mediapersons here today.
He said due to closure of auction at the Lasalgaon and Pimpalgaon markets for the last two-three days, nearly 40,000 to 50,000 ton onions could not be auctioned, causing financial losses worth Rs 3 crore to farmers.
Mr Holkar said in January next year, the onion prices will fall drastically as the crop was planted on huge proportion this year. To check the decreasing prices, farmers may resort to agitations.
Speaking on the onion export ban, the NAFED chairman said there was no such ban on export. Nashik traders exploited the situation in their favour by keeping the market closed. Some local people supported their endeavour and as consquence, farmers suffered financial losses.
''We export onion to countries like Bangladesh, Malaysia, Singapore, Nepal and Gulf countries in large quantities. We also export onions in very small quantity to European countries, the Philippines, Indonesia and Mauritius. Our rate is 500 US Dollars per ton, whereas the Chinese are selling onions at USD 260-270.
Effectively, we are facing a stiff competition from China,'' he said.
''Last year we exported around 11.5 lakh tonne onions, while this year it will be around 8 lakh tonne, he added.
