Karnataka to help forge greater unity among secular forces:Left

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) The Left parties today described the political developments in Karnataka as ''a good opportunity'' to forge greater unity among non-BJP forces to prevent the saffron party from gaining a foothold in the southern state.

Reacting to the BJP's decision to withdraw support to the H D Kumaraswamy government in the state after talks to resolve differences over power transfer to the party failed, top leaders of the CPI and the CPI(M) expressed the hope that secular parties would now focus more on people's issues.

Talking to UNI, CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan said it was good that the JD(S) led by former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, even belatedly, had chosen to refuse to hand over the reins of power to the BJP.

''The move would have allowed the communal party to gain its foodhold in a southern state,'' Mr Bardhan said.

Senior CPI(M) leader Rup Chand Pal said, ''It is good that the non-BJP forces are trying to consolidate their position and were opposing the communal forces in a more organised way.'' Mr Pal, party Chief whip in the Lok Sabha, hoped that in the coming days all secular forces would devote their time and energy to address people's issues -- mainly the galloping price rise, the collapse of the PDS, tardy imeplmentation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and rising unemployment and poverty.

Meanwhile, the Congress was non-committal about the Karnataka developments.
