Japan plane on wrong runway, collision averted

TOKYO, Oct 6 (Reuters) An All Nippon Airways plane landed on the wrong runway at Osaka's Itami airport forcing another plane to delay take-off to avoid a collision, government and airport officials said.

None of the 165 passengers and crew aboard the ANA plane were injured yesterday.

The pilot of the ANA Airbus A320, arriving from Matsuyama, in western Japan, misheard the air traffic controller's instructions, and landed on the wrong runway, just as a Japan Airlines Corp (JAL) plane was preparing to enter the same runway to take off, they said.

The pilot of the JAL plane halted after spotting the approaching ANA plane.

''If he hadn't noticed, an accident could have happened,'' said a Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport official who declined to give his name, saying he was not a spokesman.

The ministry is questioning the traffic controller for more details, he said.

Peru seeks more US help in counter-narcotics

Peru, a top cocaine producer, asked for patrol boats and helicopters to combat drug and human trafficking along its rivers and coast. Peruvian officials also want to buy a landing ship for use in disaster response, according to a US defense official traveling.....

Stop smiling! You're on the catwalk

Paris, Oct 6: Is it stress? Fear of wrinkles? Hunger? Or a designer's artistic preference? Models on the catwalk rarely smile. Most of the girls presenting this season's ready-to-wear collection in New York, London, Milan and Paris have paraded out with serious expressions on their faces, staring straight ahead as they made their way across the runway. ''Today, it's very well regarded in the profession to walk the catwalk without emotions,'' supermodel Claudia Schiffer told Reuters at the Chanel show yesterday,.....
