I will lose despite popular support: Wajih

Islamabad, Oct 6: Lawyers' Presidential candidate Justice (retd) Wajihuddin Ahmed has said he is destined to lose despite having popular support.

He said he would have won a presidential election from the new assemblies while addressing representatives of Pakistan Bar Council, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Punjab Bar Council (PBC) and Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) here yesterday.

''The election commissioner should ensure secret ballot to keep the sanctity of the vote...The lawyers' struggle is Pakistan's last chance and it should not be lost,'' Mr Ahmed said.

He said Pakistanis always came together in adverse situations.

They were united during the current crisis too.

''Lawyers had problems during their movement, but he who laughs last, laughs best,'' he said.

He claimed even a senior government official had written a letter of support to him. Mr Ahmed did not name the official but quoted him as saying, ''Honourable judge, I can sacrifice my life for your campaign.'' He declined to speak about the Reconciliation Ordinance, but said he would speak at length about it later. ''I have always respected the Supreme Court and had not said anything that was equivalent to contempt of court,'' he added.
