HC rejects AJSU candidates writ petition

Ranchi, Oct 6 (UNI) The Jharkhand High Court today dismissed the writ petition of All Jharkhand Student Union (AJSU) candidate contesting in the Ranchi University students union election.

Rakesh Kiran, a student of a law college here, had filed the petition regarding the rejection of his nomination by the returning officer of Chotanagpur Law College.

Rakesh was not allowed to contest the election saying that he did not belong to the age group of 21-24 years.

A Division bench, comprising Chief Justice M Karpagyavinayagam and Justice Amreshwar Sahay, delivered the judgement after hearing the writ petition.

Prosecutor R Krishna, on behalf of the petitioner, challenged the order passed by the returning officer the amendment in the statute of students union election by the Chancellor of Ranchi University were against a Supreme Court judgement.

Referring to the verdict related to Kerala University, Mr Krishna said a writ petition was filed by the University before the Apex Court regarding the eligibility criteria of the student.

The SC had referred the matter to the Union Human Resources department following which the Lyngdoh committee was formed, which categorised the students under two groups, the lawyer informed the court.

According to the categorisation, students in age group 17 to 22 years would be treated as graduate students and the second group of students up to 25 years would fall under the category of post graduate student.

He further informed the bench that the students of Law College came under the category of post graduates.

Train services disrupted by demostrators demanding medical college

Government announces further relief measures for exporters

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) The Government today announced further relief measures for exporters hit by a rising rupee currency and added more sectors eligible for lower bank lending rates. A finance ministry statement said the government had extended the list for the exemption of service tax for general insurance services, technical testing and analysis agency and inspection and certification agency services for exporters. Exporters will now be exempted from paying service tax for these services. The rupee hit 39.36 per.....
