Gore among others awarded by tribals

Mawphlang, Oct 6 (UNI) Tribal chieftains has awarded former US Vice- President Al Gore with the ''People's Parliament Global Award'' for promoting worldwide awareness on global warming at the People's Parliament held in this village of Meghalaya.

Gore was awarded for his hard-hitting environmental documentary- ' An Inconvenient Truth,' which won three Academy Awards. The award will request the American Embassy in New Delhi to accept the award, which includes a citation, gifts, photograph of ancient Mawphlang sacred groves and a plaque.

Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Grassroots Democracy Advisory Council and NCP parliamentarian Robert Kharshiing said the tribal chieftains decided to award Gore for his untiring efforts in promoting a worldwide awareness on global warming.

The People's Parliament, attended by thousands of people from across the state also awarded Major Ahluwalia, Chairman, Indian Spinal Injury Centre (New Delhi), E.Sreedharan, Chairman and MD, Delhi Metro, Ms Nirmal Deshpande, MP and eminent Gandhian, Bhushan Raina, Editor, Business Economics and Dinesh Trivedi, MP.

13 personalities from Meghalaya will also be honoured with People's Parliament Meghalaya Awards. Persons selected for the People's Parliament Meghalaya Awards are Helen Giri, late Babu Onderson Mawrie, Dr Milton Sangma, Advisor Council of Nokmas, Dr Balajied Sing Syiem of Khyrim, SG Momin, retired IPS officer and President Council of Nokmas, late Shrolenson Marbaniang, OB Tariang, Rev RR Cunville, Fr Alfred Marzo, SDB, Sister Helen Albisuri, Campbell Shullai, Tony Marak, IFS and the Lyngdoh of Hima Mawphlang.

Gurjars dharna in Delhi, court arrest demanding ST status

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) The Gujjars today held a massive dharna in the Capital city, demanding Scheduled Tribe Status in Rajasthan and dismissal of the Vasundhara Raje Government in the State for its failure to meet its commitment to confer tribal status to Gujjars during the Assembly polls and protect their rights, life and property. Hundreds of Gurjjars gathered at the Jantar Mantar here, under the banner of Akhil Bhartiya Gujar Sangharsh Samiti, and proceeded to the BJP headquarters here.....

Lalu flags off Buddhists Circuit Special train

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) Railway Minister Lalu Prasad today flagged off a special train 'Mahaparinirvan' for a Buddhist pilgrimage from India and abroad, particularly from Thailand, Singapore and Korea, to promote tourism in the country. Speaking on the occasion here, Mr Prasad said, ''This special Rajdhani Express type train will cater to Buddhist tourists. The tour package includes visits to Lumbini, birthplace of Lord Buddha, besides Sarnath, Bodhgaya and Kushinagar.'' ''I thank Tourism Minister Ambika Soni who took special interest.....

HRTC and Bus stand Contractor on loggerheads

Kangra, Oct 6 (UNI) Tension prevailed in Kangra bus stand here after the contractor constructing the bus stand under Build Operate and transfer (BOT) scheme blocked the entrance and exit of the bus stand when he was not allowed to collect the 'adda' (stand) fee by HRTC authorities. As the HRTC officials, headed by the Regional manager, began collecting the stand fee of Rs 20 per bus for the contractor Pushp Rajan who was allotted the contract earlier by the authorities,.....
