Eminent jurist, constitutional expert L M Singhvi dead

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) L M Singhvi, eminent jurist and former High Commissioner to the UK, died this afternoon at a city hospital, following a prolonged illness.

He was 76. He is survived by his wife, Kamla Singhvi, son, Congress Spokesperson and MP Dr Abhishek Singhvi and daughter Abhilasha.

Singhvi, who had been suffering from heart ailments, was admitted to the hospital two weeks ago. His cremation will take place tomorrow.

Singhvi, who was India's longest serving High Commissioner to the UK, was also a prolific author, poet, publicist, linguist, litterateur and a known constitutional expert.

He was associated with and consulted in the drafting of the constitutions of Bangladesh, Nepal and South Africa and was the Commissioner of Inquiry into the Administration of Justice in Trinidad and Tobago.

He was a Member of the Lok Sabha (1962-1967) and the Rajya Sabha (1998-2004) apart from being a senior advocate in the Supreme Court.

He was associated with the initial organisation of the Indian Law Institute, which he directed and administered, in its formative phase.

He also founded The Institute of Constitutional and Parliamentary Studies, Human Rights Rectangle, Centre for Human Rights Education and Training, Centre for the Study of Law and Society, the Federalism Centre, the Centre for the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, Centre for Unity of India (Rashtriya Ekta Dham) and many other organisations.

He was also the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, on several occasions and the Founder President of the Supreme Court Bar Association Trust. He was the Founder-President (now Honorary Patron) of the Commonwealth Legal Education Association, London.

He advocated and influenced the eventual creation of the National Human Rights Commission in India.

He had recieved several honours including the "Padma Bhushan" in January 1998.

JD(S) should have honoured agreement with BJP in Karanataka: JD(U)

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) Janata Dal (United) today termed the Karnataka imbriglio ''unfortunate'' and said the Janata Dal (S) should have honoured its powersharing pact with the BJP. ''If they (JD(S) had done some agreement, then it should have been honoured,'' Janata Dal (United) General Secretary Shambhu Srivastava told mediapersons when asked about the party's reaction to the tussle of power in Karnataka. Dissolve K'taka assembly: Venkaiah asks Gov

Hyderabad, Oct 6: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader M Venkaiah Naidu today urged Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur to dissolve the Assembly and order fresh elections following the party's decision to withdraw support to the Kumaraswamy Government.
