Cong opposes proposed hike in power tariff, bus fare

Chandigarh, Oct 6 (UNI) A delegation of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) today submitted a memorandum to Governor Gen (Retd) S F Rodrigues in protest against the Parkasn singh Badal government proposed move to hike the electricity tariff and bus fare in the state.

The delegation, led by PPCC president Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, also opposed the proposed hike in Electricity tariff, Bus fare and Revenue Collector Rates affecting severely all sections of society.

The PPCC demanded an immediate announcement of a minimum bonus of Rs 100 per quintal on paddy from the state funds as a relief measure for the debt-ridden farmers.

The memorandum also criticised the government for putting an embargo on the dedicated fund for the Scholarships of Dalits, Shagun Scheme for Scheduled Castes and Pensions for Widows and Old age people, causing great harassment to these categories.

It also alleged that the state government was using repressive measures for suppressing the legitimate demands of the government employees. ''The peaceful demonstrators are being brutally beaten up by the Police.'' MORE UNI MA RL PM1550

Two shipwrecked Chinese sailors rescued

Midnapore, Oct 6 (UNI) Two Chinese sailors, whose ship sank in the Andaman Sea on October 2, were today rescued by a Singaporean ship and brought to Haldia. The members of the Great Tribune first spotted two life jackets in the sea on the midnight of October 3. Later, they found the sailors Shen Leu and Jhu Ye Guan. They had been in the water for 24 hours before being rescued. The China-bound Heng Tai, carrying iron dust, had left.....

Antony Calls for Speedier Indigenisation Efforts

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) Stressing the need to minimise foreign assistance with India emerging as a major regional and global player, Defence Minister AK Antony today called for speeding up the process of indigenisation. ''Though the pace of indigenisation has increased, a lot more needs to be done... Our long-term objective is to minimise foreign assistance... TATA Memorial Centre holds a human chain in Mumbai

Mumbai, Oct 6 (UNI) On the occasion of the third World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, Tata Memorial Centre today held a human chain formation event in order to spread awareness about Palliative care for cancer patients. Mumbai Mayor Dr Shubha Raul, TV actors -- Jaya Bhattacharya, Neena Kulkarni and Vandana Gupte -- participated in the human chain formation event comprising 1,500 people.
