Chouhan reviews Water Resource Department activities

Bhopal, Oct 6 (UNI) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today issued directions for ensuring irrigation water supply to farmers up to tail end of canals for the maximum utilisation of created additional irrigation potential.

Mr Chouhan, while addressing a review meeting of senior officers of Water Resources Department at Bandh Suraksha Bhawan here, stressed on the need for paying special attention to the quality of dam and canal construction work without compromise.

He said Water Users' Associations should be taken into confidence for more efficient operation of irrigation projects.

It consisted of elected farmers and system should be implemented in consultation with them. He also directed to restart the defunct lift irrigation projects, an official release said here today.

Minister for Water Resources Anup Mishra also attended the meeting.

Mr Chouhan complemented the Water Resources Department officials for creating additional irrigation potential for 3.43 lakh hectare by completing 180 projects over last four years.

He said announcements made in public interest would be fulfilled promptly and ongoing projects would be completed within stipulated time limit.

Mr Mishra said efforts were being made to realise the vision of the Chief Minister.

Principal Secretary Arvind Joshi informed that three major, four medium and 173 minor irrigation projects had been completed in last four years by creating additional irrigation potential.

Besides, nine medium and 849 new projects had been sanctioned on completion of which irrigation potential for another 2.42 lakh hectare would be created.

The department has drawn up an action plan for next 300 days setting a target of completing five major, one medium and 329 minor projects.

Besides, work has been taken up for modernisation of 177 old dams and their canals under Water Sector Restructuring Project being implemented with World Bank assistance, the release added.

CIAL to increase non-aeronautical revenue

Kochi, Oct 6 (UNI) The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL), India's first successful government-private joint venture in the aviation sector, has drawn up an ambitious scheme to increase its non-aeronautical revenue. Speaking to reporters at the airport yesterday, CIAL MD Sriram Bharat said the company was conducting feasibility study of successfully marketing the available space at the airport complex. The study report, expected within an year, aimed at increasing the non-aeronautical revenue, which would bring down the airport's existing usage.....

UNICEF India head C Adorna returns Manila completing tenure

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) UNICEF's country representative Cecilio Adorna, who was facing charges of sexual harassment and attempted rape, has finished his tenure and left the country. A UNICEF spokesperson confirmed that Mr Adorna had to leave for Manila due to some family matters and would stay there until he takes up his next appointment in New York on October 15. Noted jurist and ambassador L M Singhvi passes away

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) Eminent jurist and constitutional expert L M Singhvi died here this afternoon following a prolonged illness. He was 76. He is survived by his wife Kamla, son Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who is the Congress spokesperson, and daughter Abhilasha. Singhvi, who had been suffering from heart ailments, had been admitted to the Max Hospital in South Delhi two weeks ago. The end came at 1345 hrs.
