BSNL to introduce wireless internet in rural areas

Mysore, Oct 6 (UNI) The subscribers, henceforth need not necessary have landline connections for internet facilities when the wireless internet connections comes into force in the Mysore telecom divisions of BSNL during the next fortnight, BSNL General Manager S Chandran said here today.

Speaking to newsmen on the eve of the BSNL Day, he said after completion of this project nearly 10,000 lines would be added and all taluk headquarters and important towns would be covered.

Mr Chandran said BSNL had embarked an ambitious plan to cover all rural telephone exchanges with broadband and these facilities would help in making broadband available in remote villages and internet on wireless at speeds upto 144KBPs.

The divisions has a capacity of nearly 1.5akhs landline connections besides more than 75000 mobile users of BSNL. In addition to existing 77 mobile towers, it has plans to add another 67 towers in the whole Mysore District.

Alert sounded, pair of trains cancelled following bandh

Ranchi, Oct 6 (UNI) The Railway authorities today sounded an alert, cancelling eight trains following the CPI(Maoist)-sponsored 24-hour "Jharkhand bandh", which started from mid night last night. Police said no untoward incident had been reported so far from any part of the state during the bandh period. Tribals in Meghalaya condemns Burmese crackdown

Mawphlang (Meghalaya) Oct 6 (UNI) Thousands of tribals from Khasi, Jaintia and Garo districts in Meghalaya today observed a two-minute silence at a Dorbar Ri(People's Parliament), as a mark of respect to Buddhist monks killed by the Burmese junta. The People's Parliament held outside the ancient scared groves, convened here, 25 kms from Shillong, by the Khasi Syiems(Chief), Jaintia Dolois(Chieftains) and Nokmas(Clan Chieftains) also urged the India and China to influence the Burmese junta to immediately restore democracy in Burma......

LM Singhvi was a constitutional expert: President

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) President Pratibha Devisingh Patil today condoled the death of Dr L M Singhvi, stating that he was a prominent constitutional expert and a scholar. In his passing away, the nation ''has lost a prominent constitutional expert, eminent jurist and renowned scholar and able Parliamentarian,'' Ms Patil said in a message. UNI.....
