Bhosle, rare politician to become CM in first term

Mumbai, Oct 6 (UNI) Babasaheb Anantrao Bhosle had the distinction in the political history of Maharashtra to become the Chief Minister in his first term, and never getting elected to a political office or post.

Bhosle, a Barrister, was elected to State Legislative Assembly in 1980 from Kurla constituency of Mumbai. He was immediately inducted into the Cabinet of A R Antulay as the Law minister.

After Congress high command decided to replace Mr Antulay following the allegations of corruption, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi zeroed in on Bhosle, to step in as the Chief Minister.

His elevation to the coveted post shocked many people. His tenure of over one year was marred by open revolt of Congress legislators and finally, he was removed from the chief Ministership to be replaced by Vasantdada Patil.

Bhosle was well known for his 'witty comments' and sense of humour.

Incidentally, Mr Bhosle, after his first tenure as MLA when he became the Chief Minister, was not so lucky to get elected to a political office again. Despite switching loyalties first to Shiv Sena and then Janata Dal, lady luck never favoured him.
