PPP to put up Fahim against Musharraf

Islamabad, Sep 25: Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party has decided to field Makhdoom Fahim Amin against President Pervez Musharraf in the October 6 presidential elections.

A formal announcement of Mr Amin's nomination would be made tomorrow, The News reported quoting party sources.

They said a decision to this effect was taken by the top leadership of the party during a meeting in Dubai, chaired by PPP chief Benazir Bhutto.

Nomination papers for the party candidate would be submitted on Thursday, the sources added.

The party had denounced Gen Musharraf's decision to seek re-election without doffing his uniform, saying it breaches the promise the government gave to it. It also threatened to join the Opposition alliance All Parties Democratic Movement in resigning from the National and Provincial Assemblies.

The Supreme Court Bar Association yesterday announced the nomination of Justice (retd) Wajihuddin Ahmad as its candidate.

Fahim, who met Ms Bhutto in Dubai recently, said, ''As of now we are sticking to our stand that the current assemblies, which have almost completed their mandate, have no right to elect a president for the next five years. This will be like robbing the new assemblies of their right to elect new president. The current assemblies have completed their age and have no right to elect a new president.''
