Kannada Rakshana Vedike activists attack kabbadi players

Bangalore, Sep 9 (UNI) Tension prevailed for some time when Kannada Rakshana Vedike activists attacked office bearers and kabbadi players of Karnataka State Kabbadi Association during the annual general body meeting and elections, today.

Police said while the process of electing new office bearers to the Association was in progress, the Vedike activists led by Praveen Shetti started attacking Association General Secretary M R Sitaram and the players, alleging that Kannadigas were neglected by the Association.

The activists ransacked furnitures and many were injured in the attack. Police, who rushed to the spot dispersed them and arrested some of the agitators.

The situation was stated to be peaceful and elections continued with tight security.

Parents of missing Madeleine head home to Britain

FARO, Portugal, Sep 9 (Reuters) British couple Kate and Gerry McCann, named as suspects in their four-year-old daughter Madeleine's disappearance, headed home from Portugal today. The McCanns boarded a flight in Faro, on Portugal's Algarve coast, bound for East Midlands Airport in central England. A spokeswoman for the McCanns said the couple were not running away from the investigation but were leaving for the sake of their two-year-old twins. Tanzania bus, lorry accident kills 27 -reports

DAR ES SALAAM, Sep 9 (Reuters) At least 27 people were killed when a bus and a lorry collided in southern Tanzania, local newspapers reported today. The accident yesterday occurred near the town of Mbeya, about 630 km (391 miles) southwest of Dar es Salaam.
