Two children among five killed in mishap

Jammu, Sep 3 (UNI) At least five persons, including two children, were killed in two separate incidents here today.

Four persons died on the spot when the car in which they were travelling skidded off and fell into the canal at Purkho, 15 km from here, police said. On receiving the information, police swung into action and fished out all the bodies from the cannal.

The deceased have been identified as Sushma Chowdhary, Kanta Devi, Rami Kumar and Madhu -- all residents of Nowshera of Rajouri district and presently residing at Paloura in Jammu.

In another incident, a woman, identified as Noni Bai, wife of Gulsu Ram resident of Chattisgarh, was hit by a train while she was crossing the railway track at Jammu Tawi railway station, police said adding, she was taken Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) where she was declared brought dead.

Inquiry into 'Bhooporatam' firing postponed

Khammam, Andhra Pradesh, Sep 3 (UNI) The Justice A Panduranga Rao Commission appointed by the Andhra Pradesh Government to go into the police firing in the district in which six persons were killed last month during CPI (M)'s 'Bhooporatam' (land struggle) postponed its inquiry to tomorrow as neither the victims nor the witnesses attended the hearing which started today. Counsel for the victims and witnesses said they could not be present as the summons did not specify the place and time.....

Chief Editor among 5 journos sentenced to jail in defamation case

Lucknow, Sep 3 (UNI) A court today awarded jail terms to three journalists and two publisher-printers for publishing a defamatory article and interview. Special Chief Judicial Magistrate (customs) Suresh Chandra passed this order after admitting the complaint of senior IAS officer Anant Kumar Singh, the then district magistrate of Muzaffarnagar. Mr Singh is presently Secretary, Medical Education. The then journalist Raman Kripal has been sentenced to one year rigourous imprisonment and fined Rs 5,000. Rs one crore morphine seized in UP capital, 2 held

Lucknow, Sep 3 (UNI) The Crime Branch team of police today unearthed a smuggling syndicate in Gomti Nagar area of the Uttar Pradesh capital with the arrest of two persons possessing morphine, estimated at Rs one crore in the international market. Acting on a tip-off, cops reached near the Gomti Nagar Barrage and nabbed Abdul and Zakir Ali. On being frisked, one kg morphine was recovered from their possession. Their interrogation was on, police said. UNI.....
