Tight security in Jammu on Janmashtami

Jammu, Sep 3 (UNI) An unprecedented security blanket has been thrown around the City of Temples as people celebrate Krishana Janmashtami here tomorrow.

Keeping in view terror threats and a huge rush of devotees to the temples, special security arrangements have been made by police to check untoward incidents during the festival.

Forces have been deployed to ensure incident-free Janmashtami celebrations, a senior police official said.

Police have been maintaining extra vigil following the killing of top Jaish-e-Mohammed militant Saifullah Qari on the outskirts of the city last month.

''All major public points like Raghunath Bazaar, Shalimar Chowk, Jewel Chowk and Canal Road are under tight surveillance. Closed Circuit Televisions (CCTV) have been installed to keep an eye on activities around famous temples in the city,'' the official said.

Temples in the city have been decorated with flowers, buntings and special lighting effects for the festival.

People were seen purchasing kites and Lord Krishna idols for 'Janmashtami Pujan'.

A big colourful procession with tableaux of 'Krishna Leela' was taken out in the city this evening. Hundreds of devotees were seen dancing to the beats of drums and chanting hymns of 'Krishna Avtaar' to mark Janmashatami celebrations.
