TADA, POTA failed to combat terrorism: Raja

Puducherry, Sep 3 (UNI) CPI national secretary D Raja today said the scrapped MISA, POTA or TADA could not be the answer to combat terrorism as ''they proved a failure.'' Talking to newspersons here, Mr Raja said bomb blasts were recurring very often. Exactly 100 days after the May 18 Mecca Masjid bomb blast, the recent twin blasts in Hyderabad proved the lack of coordination between the Central and State intellegence agencies.

Lack of operational effectiveness could also be another reason, he said adding there should be a proper preparedness against rightwing extremists.

To a question on the setting up of a coordination committee of alliance partners in the states on the line of the one at the Centre to iron out problems, Mr Raja said the Chief Ministers had agreed to talk to the allies to resolve issues.

Russian strategic bombers run Arctic exercise

MOSCOW, Sept 3 (Reuters) Twelve Russian strategic bombers will take part in an Arctic exercise today and tomorrow including tactical launches of cruise missiles, an air force spokesman said. He did not specify where the exercise was taking place but said TU-95MC bombers would take off from five air bases stretching from the Volga River city of Engels to Anadyr on the Chukotka Peninsula overlooking the United States. ''The planes will also practise mid-air refuelling from Il-78 transport planes,'' the spokesman.....

India secure victory to keep series alive

LONDON, Sept 3 (Reuters) An unbeaten 91 by England captain Paul Collingwood could not prevent India from securing a 38-run victory in their rain interrupted fifth one-dayer at Headingley in Leeds. Half centuries from Saurav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh helped India to a massive total of 324-6 yesterday. Dragulescu to miss worlds with back injury

BUCHAREST, Sep 3 (Reuters) Romania's Olympic silver medallist Marian Dragulescu will miss this week's World championships in Stuttgart due to a back injury, a Romanian official said today. Dragulescu suffered back pain during training, Octavian Bellu, the head of the National Sport Agency, told Reuters by telephone from Stuttgart. ''Doctors banned him from competing after deciding he severely injured his back. ''Dragulescu's absence will be a great loss for our team,'' Bellu added.
