Rains lash many areas in north-west region

Chandigarh, Sep 3 (UNI) Moderate rain lashed isolated places in Punjab and Haryana and many areas in Himachal Pradesh since last night, providing respite from hot and humid weather conditions in the region.

Light to moderate rain pounded parts of Punjab with Balachour recording 7.2 mm rainfall overnight. The holy city of Amritsar and Ludhiana were also lashed by downpour.

Certain areas in Haryana also experienced rain with Karnal recording 4.0 mm while Rohtak reported trace rainfall till this morning.

Widespread rain lashed Himachal Pradesh, including mid and lower hills, while high altitude areas experienced mild snowfall, bringing a considerable fall in the temperature in the hilly state.

Intense cold prevailed in the tribal district of Kinnuar after intermittent snow in the higher altitude areas, a report from Shimla said.

Moderate to heavy rain lashed many places in Kullu, Kangra, Hamirpur, Shimla and Solan districts of the state. Nalagarh with 114.3 mm rain was the wettest place in Himachal Pradesh.

Palampur recorded 66.4 mm followed by Baijnath registering 56.0 mm , Dharamsala 36.6 mm, Ghumarwin 35 mm, Solan 29.4 mm, Sujanpur Tira 27.0 mm, Pandoh 23.0 mm and Una 10.4 mm rainfall overnight.

Sundernagar, Kalpa, Rampur, Suni, Kahu, Naudan, Guler, Nagrota Surian and Gamroor areas in the state also had rainfall.

Intermittent rain lashed the capital town of Shimla during the day after an overcast sky. Upper areas of Shimla district, including tourist places of Wildflower Hall, Kufri, Naldehra and Narkanda, the key tourist place of Manali in Kullu district and Kasauli in Solan district also had rainfall.

Sharp showers lashed Chandigarh today after monsoon clouds enveloped the city, providing relief from humid weather conditions.

The Met Office predicted moderate to rather heavy rain or thundershowers at many places in Himachal Pradesh and light to moderate rain or thundershowers at few places in Haryana and Punjab during the next 24 hours. It warned of heavy rain at isolated palces in Himachal Pradesh during the next 48 hours.

Meghalaya police arrested ANLF-A ultra

Shillong, Sept 3 (UNI) Meghalaya police have arrested a militant cadre and a close-aide of A'chik National Liberation Front - A leader Nobin K. Marak alias Mangkram from Dagal area in East Garo Hills district. Waildas N. Sangma, the ultra was arrested on September 1, police said today. Police, however, did not recover any arms or ammunition from the arrested. Meanwhile, police have registered a case against the militant cadre. UNI.....

Thousands throng Guruvayur temple on Sri Krishna Jayanti

Thrissur, Sep 3 (UNI) Thousands of devotees today thronged to the Sri Krishna Temple at Guruvayur here to pay obeisance to the Lord on the occasion of 'Sri Krishna Jayanti'. A special 'Kazhcha Sheeveli' (procession) was performed with three tuskers, owned by the temple, taking out the golden idol of Lord Krishna to the accompaniment of 'panchavadya melam'. The special offerings of the day were 'neyyappam' and 'palpayasam'. More than 10,000 devotees partook of the customary feast (pirannal sadya).....

Centre to spend Rs 50,000 crs for road connectivity in NE

Kolkata, Sep 3 (UNI) The Centre will spend Rs 50,000 crore in the next five years for road connectivity in the North Eastern region, Union Minister of Development of North Eastern Region (DONER) and Panchayati Raj Mani Shankar Aiyer today said. Speaking at a conference of exporters belonging to the Shellac and Forest Products Export Promotion Council and Calcutta Chamber of Commerce in the city, Mr Aiyer said it was essential to develop road links in the region for its allround.....
